Shipping a car from Chula Vista: orders, family and everything else
Chula Vista is the second-largest city in San Diego County and the heart of the South Bay, wedged between the naval installations along the bay and the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. That location gives the city a particular shipping profile. Sailors and Marines ship cars on PCS orders. Families send vehicles to relatives in Texas, Arizona and beyond. And a growing number of residents in the newer eastern neighborhoods relocate for work, with a car that needs to arrive before they do.
Big Bear's Chula Vista desk handles all of it. Price your route with the quote tool above, or call (619) 514-4660 and talk to a coordinator who knows the South Bay.
Military shipments from the South Bay
Naval Base San Diego at 32nd Street is ten minutes up the 5, and a large share of the sailors stationed there live in Chula Vista, National City and Otay Ranch. Add Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Naval Base Point Loma and the training commands, and PCS moves are a daily part of the desk's work. What matters when you ship on orders:
- Report date first. Tell your coordinator when the car needs to be at the destination and we set the pickup window backward from it, with cushion for a cross-country run.
- Off-base pickup. Carriers can't enter base housing. We meet you at your off-base address or outside the gate.
- Paperwork. You get an itemized invoice and a bill of lading with condition reports at both ends for reimbursement claims.
- Lanes we run constantly. Chula Vista to Norfolk, Jacksonville, Pensacola, San Antonio and the DC area are regular routes with predictable timing.
Active duty, reservists and veterans receive a military rate on every quote.
Routes and transit times
Carriers leaving the South Bay head up the 5 or the 805 to join the Los Angeles freight stream, or east on Interstate 8 toward Yuma, Phoenix and the Southwest. Transit on the eastbound lanes is quick; the East Coast runs take a week or more. Representative routes:

|---|---|---|---|
| Chula Vista → Los Angeles, CA | 130 mi | Same day–1 day | $300–$475 |
| Chula Vista → Phoenix, AZ | 350 mi | 1–2 days | $450–$650 |
| Chula Vista → Las Vegas, NV | 340 mi | 1–2 days | $450–$650 |

East side, west side: where pickups happen
Chula Vista is two cities when it comes to car-hauler access. The eastern neighborhoods, from Eastlake and Otay Ranch to Rolling Hills Ranch and Millenia, were built in the last thirty years with wide streets, roundabouts a truck can manage and large retail lots at every village center. Curbside pickup is routine there, subject to HOA rules about commercial vehicles, which your coordinator checks. The older west side, from Third Avenue Village to the neighborhoods near the bayfront, has narrower streets, alleys and on-street parking, and the driver will usually ask to meet on Broadway, Third Avenue, H Street or at one of the shopping centers along the 5. Bonita's canyon roads and the hillside streets above Sweetwater are meeting-point territory as well.
The border, Mexico and what we don't do
The San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry are a few miles south of the office, and we get the question often: our carriers operate in the lower 48 only. We do not transport vehicles into or out of Mexico and we cannot pick up in Tijuana. If you are importing a vehicle through Otay Mesa, we can collect it from a bonded yard or your address on the U.S. side once it has cleared customs and ship it anywhere in the country from there.
What a Chula Vista shipment costs
South Bay rates run slightly above Los Angeles on the long lanes, because fewer carriers originate in San Diego County and most drivers add a positioning leg up the 5. The difference is modest on common routes and larger on unusual ones. Bigger factors are the size and weight of the vehicle, open versus enclosed, whether the car runs, and timing: a flexible one-to-two-week window gets you the best rate, while a fixed date inside 48 hours means expedited pricing. Summer and the weeks before the school year are busiest. Quotes are all-in with door-to-door service and carrier cargo insurance included.
Open and enclosed carriers
Most South Bay vehicles ride open and that is the right call for a daily driver. Enclosed shipping suits the lowriders and restored classics that show at the Chula Vista and National City car events, imported exotics that have just cleared customs, and anything with a value you would rather not expose to a week of road debris. Expect roughly 40 to 60 percent more for enclosed, with a liftgate and soft tie-downs.
Students and seasonal moves
Southwestern College and the San Diego universities ship cars at the start and end of each year, and the South Bay has a steady snowbird flow to and from Arizona. Book both legs of a seasonal move at once, in early fall and again in spring, to lock a schedule before the peak rush.
Receiving a car in the South Bay
Sailors reporting to San Diego, families arriving from out of state and buyers who found a car elsewhere all need vehicles delivered to Chula Vista, and inbound works just like outbound. The driver meets you at your address if the street allows or at an agreed spot nearby, you compare the car against the origin condition report, and you sign the bill of lading. If you are still in transit yourself, a named friend or family member can receive the car on your behalf. Tell your coordinator who that is when you book.
Before pickup
Wash the car for an accurate inspection, keep fuel to a quarter tank, remove the FasTrak tag and personal items, and take photos of every side. If you are deploying and will be gone, name the person who will release the car and sign the bill of lading. Have a key ready and confirm the meeting point if you are on the west side or in Bonita. Updates follow at pickup, in transit and on delivery.
